Trains on the Rugeley to Birmingham New Street line were suspended following the accident at 8.20am.

Two trains travelling on the line were stopped at Walsall and passengers asked to get off. London Midland laid on alternative transport for those affected.

Network Rail engineers arrived at the scene at 9am to begin repairing the damage and services were resumed at 9.10am.

Company spokseman Jon Crampton said: "We are currently assessing the incident. The road will be closed until repairs are carried out which will depend on the extent of the damage.

"A slower service has been resumed in the meantime."

London Midland spokeswoman Lindsey Preece said: "A lorry crashed through the barriers at the Bloxwich level crossing. No trains were involved.

"Road transport services were put into operation as a replacement and ticket access has been set up with Transport West Midlands so people can use their rail tickets on buses."
