Huge fire forces residents to jump from windows

Firefighters tackled a severe blaze in the early hours of this morning at a building that contains a shisha lounge, which forced two people to jump from the first floor to safety.

Ten crews were called to the fire in High Street, Deritend in Digbeth at 3.14am.

On arrival, nine people living in flats above a ground floor shisha lounge had got out of the property. Five more people were evacuated, including two people who jumped from the first floor.

The two people suffered suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

While firefighters battled against the flames, ambulance crews and police were called to assist. A police helicopter also hovered overhead to pass information on to control rooms about the fire.

By 7.24am, the fire was put out.

One crews remained at the scene this afternoon and the High Street between Heath Mill Lane and Adderley Street was also closed.

It is not yet clear how the fire started.
