Crews were called to the low-rise block in Cheapside at around 2.45am yesterday.

Several bins had been set a light causing smoke to spread into the upper floor flat.

Firefighters said the property was 'severely smoke logged' but fortunately, it had been empty at the time.

Watch commander Andy Morgan said: "This was an arson attack. There was a lot of smoke, which could be seen from half a mile away.

"If there had been someone in the flat at the time, it could have been a lot worse.

"Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus searched the flat and extinguished the fire."

Crews from Bilston, Willenhall and Walsall attended.
