Officers closed off the site around the Wightwick Mill Lock on the waterway near Bridgnorth Road in Wolverhampton after the discovery was made shortly by a passerby at 11.15am yesterday. The man is aged in his 70s. Investigations were carried out at the site before it reopened around two hours later.

Retired postmaster Don Chapman was travelling in a boat from Fradley through to Stourport but had to moor his boat after police arrived at the lock.

He said: "I was waiting for around two hours in total. It was a bit of a shock when we found out why."

Ambulance staff attended and the man was confirmed dead at the scene.
