Drivers faced miles of tailbacks today after an 18-ton gearbox fell from a vehicle on the M6.
There were long delays on the southbound motorway between junctions nine for Wednesbury and six for Birmingham.
The Highways Agency said delays could be expected throughout the day due to two lanes being closed as the road was repaired.
A lorry fire around junction 8 for the M5 was also causing problems.
