Two taken to hospital as cars involved in collisions

Two people were taken to hospital after their car was shunted by a lorry and pushed down an embankment in one of two crashes in Staffordshire.

Firefighters were also called to the M6 where a car had left the road and gone onto the embankment.

Crews from Stafford were called to a section of road between the Swinfen Island and the Wall Island near Lichfield at 7pm yesterday. Crew commander Paul Goodman said: "A car had been shunted by a lorry and this had pushed it down the embankment.

"We had to cut two people out of the vehicle, and they were both taken to hospital. Thankfully it seems like they hadn't got very serious injuries." Crews from Lichfield and Tamworth also attended.

Meanwhile, emergency services were called after a a Peugeot 307 Cabriolet left the northbound carriageway of the M6 between junction 12 for Cannock and 13 for Stafford at about 9.30pm.

The male driver was treated at the scene but the motorway remained open.

Meanwhile, thousands of drivers were held up today after a vehicle fire on the M6.

It happened on the southbound carriageway between junctions two at the M69 near Coventry and three for Nuneaton at 5.30am. The middle land and fast lane had to be closed while emergency services attended the scene.

Traffic stretched back 10 miles to junction 3a.
