Lorry fire causes M54 delays
A lane of the M54 was shut off to motorists after a lorry caught fire today.
The blaze caught hold on the recycling vehicle between Junction 1 at Featherstone and the link to the M6 at Junction 10A for Essington.
Firefighters called out to tackle the fire which broke out at 4.45am said the turbo on the engine of the lorry had blown leading to oil on the exhaust catching fire.
Fallings Park Fire Station watch commander Simon Hardiman said: “It was not badly damaged as the driver had isolated the power. We had to get the gritters out as we had been using water and didn’t want it to ice up in the cold weather.”
The inside lane of the motorway was shut off to drivers on the eastbound carriageway for around an hour as a result of the fire.
Just after 7.30am there was also a broken down vehicle on the M6 southboundbetween Junction 10A and Junction 10 for Walsall which also blocked one lane.
