Man stabbed in the back following Wolverhampton Bank Holiday trouble

A man was stabbed three times in the back after violence erupted in Wolverhampton city centre over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Police believe the man was attacked following trouble close to Wolverhampton Civic Hall in the early hours of Monday.

Officers said a 29-year-old man arrived at a hospital at just before 2.40am with stab wounds.

His condition is serious but stable and police say he is expected to make a full recovery.

He is believed to have been stabbed, in Humphries Road, in the Low Hill area of the city, in the early hours.

Officers believe the attack was linked to earlier disorder just after midnight on Cheapside and North Street in the city centre.

CCTV images are being scoured as an investigation gets under way.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

Detective Sergeant Chris Jones said: "The investigation is still in the very early stages, and we’re trying to piece together the circumstances of the stabbing, and the events leading up to it.

"We know there were lots of people out enjoying Bank Holiday Sunday last night, and they may have witnessed the ongoing disorder in the city.

“I’m appealing for those people to come forward to tell us what they saw, as it may prove vital to the on-going enquiry.

“We’re also keen to hear from anyone with information about the stabbing in Humphries Road, in particular those who witnessed what happened, or know who was involved.”

Humphries Road residents shock of their concerns after hearing a commotion in the street.

One resident, who did not wish t be named, said: “We heard shouting from a lot of people outside and I saw a guy lying on the floor, it was very early and woke me up.

“I heard he was injured but I didn’t realise what had happened, it’s scary as I have children.”

Another added: “They were standing over a man on the floor and then someone in a car came and took him away.

“It’s scary to live near this, especially as it’s normally such a quiet area.

“We then saw the police and the cordon put up after that.”

Just last month three men were stabbed in a night of violence close North Street and the Civic Hall.
