Police have warned motorists to be alert

Drivers were duped as the crook struck multiple times when meeting owners and pretending he was interesting in buying the cars.

Vehicles have been stolen in Cannock, South Staffordshire and Lichfield after test drives were arranged with the owners.

Drivers are being warned to be on their guard after the scam was reported to police.

After arranging a test drive for the cars, which were all advertised for sale on AutoTrader, the man, described as white, around 6ft tall, of stocky build with stubble, has then driven off.

He has struck seven times since April 18, Staffordshire Police said.

Chiefs are now warning drivers to be aware who they are allowing to test drive their cars

Detective Inspector John Quilty, from Staffordshire Police CID, said: "We are reminding the public to be alert if you are selling your car. Do not hand your keys over to a potential buyer, and be sure to ask for ID or confirmation of insurance before allowing a test drive to take place.

"If you do have an unusual meeting with a prospective buyer, or have any information in relation to these thefts, please report it to us on 101 quoting incident number 719 of June 4.

"Alternatively, to remain anonymous, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Cannock councillor Paul Witton said he was disgusted by the actions of the conman.

He said: "It's an awful thing to do. I don't know what society is coming to.

"These people have got no conscience. Too many people are too trusting these days."

Councillor Witton said he believed falling police numbers were resulting in rising crime levels.

He said: "There are not enough police on the streets to take action and stop this sort of thing happening."
