Teenage driver led police on four-mile chase hitting speeds of 90mph

A teenage driver went on a four-mile rampage, with a police officer saying it was 'one of the worst cases of dangerous driving' he had ever seen.

Jahed Ahmed, aged 18, careered around Black Country streets at up to 90mph, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard. He 'miraculously' avoided injuring other motorists, while passengers in his car lobbed objects at a pursuing police car.

During the pursuit around Walsall and Wednesbury, Ahmed failed to give way at junctions, used a bollard as a roundabout and sped through a red light – only just avoiding a collision with a minibus, the court was told.

Officers tried to get him to stop but he refused and was followed by a marked police car.

The court was told how Ahmed had taken his sister's Ford Fiesta on January 9 without permission and had four passengers on board, who threw objects from the car at the police vehicle following them.

Mr Howard Searle, prosecuting, said the pursuit only came to an end when the car Ahmed was driving smacked into a kerb.

"After police had conducted a check on the vehicle they decided that they wanted to stop it but they put on the blue lights and he failed to stop," he said.

"It was driving over 90mph around the Bescot area.

"He drove through a pedestrian crossing at 80mph and failed to give way at various junctions and keep left at bollards.

"It was only when he hit the kerb damaging the vehicle that he came to a halt."

Mr Edward Soulsby, defending, said Ahmed had no previous convictions.

He added: "This is a young man who has wept at the prospect of what he was facing. He is currently working as a trainee engineer.

"He went to buy some food and picked up pals and then saw a police car and panicked.

"He is a very stupid boy but beyond this he is a good lad."

Ahmed, of Vicarage Road, Wednesbury, pleaded guilty to two charges of dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

"You committed multiple driving offences, which showed deliberate disregard for the safety of others.

"It was miraculous you did not collide with a minibus.

"It was an outrageous piece of dangerous driving and you are lucky no injury was caused to any person."

Ahmed was also banned from driving for two years and 10 months.
