Salvatore Bongiovi passed away in hospital two days after the crash in Lichfield Road, near Rushall Care Home, last Wednesday.

The 80-year-old man is alleged to have been struck by a silver Mercedes at around 11am.

Police said he passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham on Friday afternoon.

In a statement, Mr Bongiovi's family said: "The kindest, most loving and loved husband, father and grandfather, loved by everyone that met him.

"Taken from us so cruelly and in the most unimaginable way."

Officers are still seeking anyone who saw the Mercedes. It is believed the car was used in a theft from a petrol station in Ablewell Street earlier.

A 41-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and for having no insurance.

He appeared in court on Friday morning and has been remanded in custody.
