Lichfield Road crash: Man arrested after suspected hit-and-run left elderly man seriously injured

A man has been arrested following a suspected hit-and-run crash that left a pensioner with serious head injuries.

The crash happened yesterday at around 11am in Lichfield Road, in Walsall.

The victim, a man believed to be in his 80s, sustained severe head injuries.

He was airlifted to the major trauma centre at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

He remains in a serious condition.

The pensioner was hit between the junctions for Mellish Road and Daw End Lane.

Following a police appeal for information a man was identified and arrested by officers in the early hours of this morning.

A car was also recovered.

A man, aged 41, is currently being questioned on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the force's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We continue to investigate the circumstances around the collision and we still need people to come forward with information.

"We would like to thank the public for their help especially with the information received so far following the appeal."
