Dramatic M5 police chase ends with car going wrong way on motorway and three people in custody

Published

A dramatic police chase ended with three men in custody after the car they were in veered the wrong way down a slip road on a busy Black Country motorway today.

Three men were arrested following the pursuit of a suspected stolen Vauxhall Mokka along the M5 today.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) picked up the Mokka, believed to have been stolen during a burglary on the Wirral in Merseyside, just before 6am heading northbound near Worcester.

A stinger device was deployed to deflate the car's tyres but it still continued around the Junction 2 (Oldbury) roundabout and veered the wrong way down the southbound slip road before officers were able to bring it to a halt.

The driver, a 27-year-old man from Liverpool, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police, while a 24-year-old male passenger, also from Liverpool, was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A 25-year-old man, also a passenger in the vehicle, was arrested but later taken to hospital with minor injuries and will be questioned later.

Junction 2's southbound was exit was closed in the wake of the drama, causing delays of up to 30 minutes for drivers and queues back to West Bromwich.

Sergeant Damian Shave said: "This is another great example of our officers acting quickly to respond to information about people who are using the Midlands motorway network to commit crime.

"Crime has no place in our communities and the motorways are no different. We will always act on information where possible, to bring offenders to justice and prevent further crime."
