Warning after bogus callers strike in West Bromwich

A warning has been issued about bogus callers operating in the West Bromwich area.

Published

It follows a report that a suspect called at an address stating that they were there to look at work regarding re-decoration to the inside of the property, but this male did not have any form of ID.

Following the incident it has also been confirmed by Sandwell Council that there is no such work taking place in the area on homes at this time.

Residents are being advised to always ask for ID, and if none is provided by the caller to not let them into homes and to call police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.

If the person at the door does have ID but they have not booked an appointment, Sandwell's crime prevention panel also advises calling the company or organisation on the phone number off bills or statements and not off the ID card itself.

A spokesman for the panel adds: "You do not have to let them into your home if they are there for an honest reason – they will be happy for you to book an appointment with the main office and come back at a more suitable time."

Anyone who suspects they have been target by a bogus caller can report the incident anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111, or alternatively visit their website crimestoppers-uk.org
