An elderly lady was targeted in Tipton and handed over £300 to a man claiming to have been sent by Sandwell Council to cut down a tree.

While she was distracted, her handbag and a large amount of cash was stolen from her home.

The incident took place on Monday.

It has also been revealed that an elderly man in West Bromwich was asked for £320 for some gardening work to be done on February 3.

Once he was paid, the man, thought to be in his 40s, left without doing any work.

Following the crimes, people have been warned not to hand money over to anyone who they don't know or cannot prove who they are.

Sandwell Council said details of the crimes had been passed to the police to investigate.

Tividale councillor Maria Crompton condemned the actions of the crooks.

She said: "It's absolutely abysmal that people can treat elderly people in this way.

"I hope the police will catch up with them as soon as possible."
