Wendy Mann, who was 26, was found dead in her West Bromwich flat in August 2015 having been strangled.

Her ex-partner Leroy Sterling, 63, is accused of murdering her and attempting to kill her new flame Trevor Tyndale six weeks earlier. He denies both charges.

At Wolverhampton Crown Court, Mr Tyndale, 53, was asked why he did not initially tell police Sterling, of Guns Lane, West Bromwich, had attacked him.

Mr Tyndale was allegedly hit over the head with a hammer and stabbed in the neck.

He said he did not want his wife to find out about his relationship with Miss Mann and she had begged him not to.

Mr Tyndale also told the court he had stayed at Miss Mann's flat in Chapel Street, Black Lake the night before she died. He was spotted on CCTV leaving the area at around 5.30am. He said he wanted to get back home before his wife woke up.

Miss Mann is believed to have been killed after 10am on August 27, as that was when calls and texts from her phone stopped.

The trial continues.
