Yobs targeted the tree, outside the Cathedral's West Door.

St Giles Hospice had used the tree for its annual Light Up a Life event on December 11.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: "We received a call at around 12.30pm on Saturday reporting damage to the Christmas tree outside Lichfield Cathedral.

"Sometime between 11pm on Friday and 6am unknown offenders had ripped off and damaged some of the lights on the tree."

Anyone with any information is asked to ring 101 quoting incident 363 of 17 December.

Light and sounds shows are taking place every night at the Cathedral until Friday. The projections by Peter Walker are accompanied by original music by David Harper.
