The next day Sukhjinder Atwal would receive the knock at the door every parent dreads.

She was told that her 'caring' son had been in a car crash and that his injuries were so serious he would not survive.

The 12-year-old schoolboy had been travelling with relative Gurvinder Kaur and his young cousin, also 12.

But Amar's life was tragically cut short after their car was involved in a crash in West Bromwich last May.

Amar, from Great Barr, was a back-seat passenger in the Mitsubishi Outlander which was being driven along Hollyhedge Road, Stone Cross.

As the family passed a junction, out, from nowhere, came Nadeem Hussain's Vauxhall Astra.

CCTV footage played during the taxi driver's trial showed the Mitsubishi being wiped out by the Astra.

The car ended up on its roof and Amar, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown out onto the road by the force of the impact.

Paramedics battled to save him but he suffered 'devastating' brain injuries and died two days later.

Hussain, 35, of Lloyd Street, Dudley, was jailed for six years yesterday at Birmingham Crown Court after being convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Experts found both cars had been going above the speed limit, but prosecutors said 'clear' give way markings meant Hussain should have known to come to a complete stop.

Hussain drove for ABC Taxis but was off-duty at the time.

The court heard the heartbreaking last words between mother and son and how the parents' lives had been impacted irreversibly.

The couple had tried for five years to conceive before turning to IVF treatment which allowed them to have Amar.

Mr Adam Western, prosecuting, said: "Mrs Atwal last saw her son alive on May 26. She remembers how Amar hugged and kissed her and said he loved her."

Amar was described as bright and caring by his teachers at Queen Mary Grammar School in Walsall.

He was also a youth player with Willenhall's Sporting Khalsa.

Amar's family decided to donate his organs to try to help others in need.

A statement from Mrs Atwal, which was read to the court, said: "We are all heartbroken by Amar's death. All we can hope is that Amar's death can help others live a life he no longer has.

"I think about that night and think to myself, what was the driver thinking?" she said.
