An inquiry has now been launched amid accusations of a cover-up into how Allan Richards was able to get away with 40 offences against 23 boys including at West Midlands police stations.

The sex predator abused six boys – relating to some 20 offences – after a complaint was first made to police back in 2000 but no action taken. He was questioned again over allegations of abuse in 2004 and again no action taken.

The 54-year-old was last month found guilty of indecently assaulting six boys while serving with the force. He was also convicted of sexual offences against 17 other boys dating from the 1970s until 2013 earlier this year – including two cases of rape.
