The 19-year-old who suffered back and arm injuries in the attack in Clarke's Lane stumbled into the John's Booze convenience store on nearby Jowetts Lane with stab wounds and blood on his hands.

Working behind the counter when the injured teenager appeared at 10.35am on Tuesday, was Tejinder Singh. "I was shocked," he said. "He had blood on his hands, and all on his fingers.

The 28-year-old shop assistant added: "He just said 'I need an ambulance'. I called for an ambulance and they said to keep him awake. We tried to keep him awake. We got some clothes to try and stop the blood." The shop has CCTV both outside and inside, which captured the teenager walking up to it with no obvious injuries.

He then enters the shop and goes straight up to the counter, visibly distressed.

He is seen taking off his coat and tracksuit top, and turns around to show his injuries, with blood visible from a wound on his back. Both staff and customers tried to help, with the youngster given a seat while they waited for paramedics to arrive, around 15 minutes later.

"He was unconscious when they got here," explained Mr Singh, as the teenager is seen on the CCTV being loaded on to a stretcher and into the back of the ambulance. West Midlands Police confirmed that the injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Officers were also present on Tuesday night at a flat nearby on the corner of Jowetts Lane and Gordon Avenue.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding. He has been bailed pending further inquiries. Residents on Clarke's Lane expressed their shock at the stabbing.

Eighty-five-year-old Iris Daniels who has lived on the road for 51 years, said: "

The police have been going up and down all day. We never used to have any trouble, but I heard a woman was mugged down at the bottom of the road last week too. I've been keeping the chain on the door."

Neighbour Pete Whitehouse added: "I've lived here for 18 years and nothing like that has happened before around here."
