CCTV played at Wolverhampton Crown Court showed how 32-year-old Craig Davies, of Hilldene Road, Kingswinford, snapped a pool cue and then used it to repeatedly strike a man.

The attack at the Lawnswood pub on Lawnswood Road, Wordsley, near Stourbridge on December 31 last year, left the victim with a 17-centimetre wound to the left hand side of his head, and a five-centimetre wound to the back of his head.

Prosecutor Mr Paul Farrow said that there were around 100 people in the pub celebrating New Year at the time, and at about 10.40pm the complainant walked outside to have a cigarette.

"He can remember being outside for 10 minutes, but then he can't remember anything after that until he was being treated by paramedics," said Mr Farrow.

In a statement the victim also said that as a result of his injuries he initially had difficulty hearing, and that he was scared to go outside.

"This made me feel on edge," he said.

Although Davies initially gave a no comment interview, he later pleaded guilty to both wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

Representing Davies, Miss Nicole Steers said: "Something happened between the complainant and his sister."

As well as six years for the wounding offence he was given 12 months to run concurrently for the possession of an offensive weapon.
