Police have issued warnings about the trend that seems to have been inspired by clown-related pranks in the US, police said.

Officers in West Bromwich tweeted yesterday that a teenager dressed as a clown had been arrested and issued a warning to other people thinking of following the trend.

While a photograph of clown reportedly lurking outside McDonald's in Kidderminster has been posted on Facebook page Clown Sightings In The UK.

Police in Sandwell tweeted from their response team account SW Response: "#CreepyClown in West Bromwich doesn't think it's so funny now he's under arrest. This 'prank' is not funny and will get you arrested."

West Midlands Police confirmed that a 13-year-old was currently on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of common assault.

It is alleged that a boy in a clown mask approached a 14-year-old on New Swan Lane at around 4.45pm on Saturday and grabbed his arm.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested a short time later on suspicion of assault and was later bailed pending further enquiries.

The alleged Kidderminster sighting posted on Clown Sightings In The UK is one of many to have been reported across the country.

While others have mostly escaped unharmed from the incidents, police are warning potential offenders they still may be committing a public order offence.
