Christopher Doughty was grabbed from behind at The Clifton on New Year's Day.

A struggle ensued in which he was punched by 36-year-old Johnathan Wright with the blow breaking his jaw.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard Mr Doughty pushed his displaced jaw back into place in the toilets at the pub before being taken to hospital.

In the weeks after the assault the victim's speech was affected and even walking would cause him pain in his jaw.

Wright, of Springfield Grove, Sedgley, was given a six-month jail term, suspended for two years, having previously admitted assault causing grievous bodily harm.

He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and to pay £3,500 in compensation to Mr Doughty.

Miss Heather Chamberlain, prosecuting, said the two men were known to each other through their partners.

On the day of the assault, Wright and his girlfriend had a 'heated argument' outside the pub after which he marched inside to confront Mr Doughty.

Miss Chamberlain, said: "There was a struggle. The defendant threw a punch which hit Mr Doughty in the face with some force. His mouth was bleeding and his whole jaw was displaced.

"He went to hospital and was told he had a fracture to his upper jaw."

"He is remorseful and apologetic. It was a single blow."
