Glynn Machin, aged 46, hit Dr Raghavendra Kamath twice – once in the chin and then in the chest – after he tried to help him after he fell over in a cubicle awaiting treatment at County Hospital in Stafford on December 28 last year.

He denied racially aggravated common assault but was found guilty after a trial.

The court heard Machin, of Knight Avenue, has a 'deep seated' addiction to alcohol and has recently undergone two detox sessions recently. In one, he left hospital on August 31 and then was at his doctor's surgery on September 1 drunk, Cannock Magistrates' Court heard.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a total of £380. That includes a £110 fine, compensation to Dr Kamath of £100, a victim surcharge of £20 and a contribution of costs of £100. He must also pay £50 for missing the court sessions.
