Harjeev Dosanjh was at the wheel of a Ford Focus when it careered into an oncoming Audi which was travelling in the correct direction along Newton Road, Great Barr around 3am, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The other driver escaped injury but the 22-year-old from Halesowen suffered a fractured jaw, lacerated liver and bleed on the brain.

A sample of his blood gave a reading almost twice the drink-drive limit, revealed Mr Edward Soulsby, prosecuting.

Dosanjh was placed in an induced coma for four days after the smash and was off work for almost four months.

Mr Balbir Singh, defending, said: "He did drive dangerously and came within a hair's breadth of death."

Dosanjh from Forth Way, Halesowen had a reading of 154 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 80.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol and was given a 14-month jail sentence suspended for two years with 200 hours of unpaid work and £340 towards the costs of the case.

He was banned from driving for two years and must pass an extended test before getting his licence back.
