Halesowen man, 52, charged over children's football match attack

A man has been charged in connection with an attack at a children's football match in Halesowen which left a referee injured.

Violence flared during a under-14s game between Halesowen Town Colts and Halesowen Harriers at Newfield Park, in Whittingham Road, in March.

West Midlands Police confirmed Nahad Yafai, aged 52, of Parkside Road, Colley Gate, Halesowen, has been charged with wounding with intent.

Yafai has been bailed and is due to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court on September 12.

Referee Oliver Howard was hurt during the game on March 20, while a male spectator, aged 49, was also injured.

The 11-a-side fixture was being played in Stourbridge and District Youth and Girls Football League.

League chairman Bob Hickman said he was shocked by what happened.
