The driver was punched and kicked after a man approached his window to say someone had been messing with his trailer.

It was stolen in Kenrick Way, off Union Street, at 4.25am yesterday.

However, the lorry was found by police just 15 minutes later at an industrial estate in Aldridge where they recovered a large quantity of wine.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the attack and police are now appealing for witnesses.

An investigation has now been launched to try and trace the robbers.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time, including other truck drivers.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Detectives continue to investigate the robbery and are appealing to any witnesses to come forward. Inquiries are ongoing and CCTV is being trawled.

"Anyone with information is urged to call us."

Kenrick Way is a popular overnight stop for haulage drivers, being closed to the M5 Junction 1 and surrounding industrial parks.

Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101.
