Paul Gascoigne charged on Wolverhampton 'race joke': Gazza to appear in court next week

Paul Gascoigne is to appear in court next week after a 'joke' he made at Wolverhampton's Civic Hall prompted a police probe.

Gazza had been due before magistrates in Dudley today to face a charge of racially aggravated abuse, but the case was adjourned administratively until next Wednesday.

Media had gathered to see the troubled star, who was due to be be formally charged with the alleged offence.

The Crown Prosecution Service had initially decided that he should not be prosecuted over the incident, but it was announced earlier this month that he would face court.

The complaint about the star's conduct during the 'Evening With Gazza' show at the Civic Hall on November 30 last year.

The apparent "joke" was reportedly a remark made by Gascoigne, who played for Spurs, Newcastle Utd, Everton and Glasgow Rangers, at the expense of a black security guard he spotted in a darkened corner of the stage.

And on the day Gazza had been expected to appear in court, the star returned to Twitter for the first time in more than six weeks - proclaiming his love for a robin and for tweets.
