Tobias Dell, of Inkerman Street, Heath Town, lost control of the car he was driving and hit a tree at 60 miles per hour, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The court heard how, on October 29 last year, Dell was driving a Seat Ibiza belonging to his friend and passenger Thomas Bailey, along Wolverhampton Road, Sedgley, at 12.55am.

Dell had drunk two vodka and Red Bulls prior to getting into the car.

He lost control of the vehicle, which he was not insured to drive, veered off the road and hit a tree.

A reconstruction carried out by the police revealed that at its fastest, the car was travelling at 97mph in a 30mph zone.

At the point of impact, the car was travelling at 60mph.

Thomas Bailey suffered severe injuries in the crash, including a broken neck and paralysis from the waist down.

Dell pleaded guilty to three charges at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court yesterday including dangerous driving, driving without insurance and failure to provide a sample of blood for testing.
