Violence flared when she ended the eight-month relationship amid concerns over the 'emotional and mental health' of Daniel Deakin, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

The woman was shocked to find him standing in the darkened lounge when she returned to her Walsall home unaware that he had secretly had keys cut for the property, said Miss Samantha Powis, prosecuting.

Deakin hit the six-week pregnant victim, grabbed her hair and banged her head against the wall before putting a gloved hand over her mouth and nose until she 'felt she was about to pass out,' continued the prosecutor.

He then pulled out a kitchen knife and pressed the blade first against her throat and then her stomach.

Deakin tore out 'clumps' of hair while dragging her round the house and threatened to cave in her head with a golf club but she managed to call 999 on the house phone and leave the line open when he went outside for a moment, Miss Powis said.

Police arrived soon afterwards to end the 90 minute ordeal that left the victim emotionally and psychologically scarred.

Mr David Swinnerton, defending, said: "He behaved appallingly but remembers nothing about what went on. He had been drinking and has had mental difficulties in the past."

Deakin from Narrow Lane, Pleck pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman on October 18 and was jailed for 20 months.

He was also made the subject of an indefinite restraining order banning him from having any contact with the victim.

Judge Kristina Montgomery QC concluded: "This was a terrifying incident. It was as if you were going to kill her."
