A sex offender from Willenhall has been jailed for more than three years after grooming a 13-year-old girl.

On four separate occasions 21-year-old Robert Turner, from Bloxwich Road South, took the schoolgirl into some woods and had sex with her.

Stafford Crown Court heard the pair had exchanged messages via their Blackberry phones but it was the girl who had contacted Turner first.

Turner admitted four charges of sexual activity with a child after meeting up with the girl on numerous occasions.

As well as being jailed for 40 months on Wednesday, Turner was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and has also been banned from working with children for life.

Judge Jonathan Gosling said Turner posed 'a significant risk to young girls'.

He told the defendant: "This girl was very young, her youth and vulnerability were obvious to you. You are an intelligent man, the law is there to protect girls like this against themselves.

"You knew exactly what you were up to and you took full advantage.

"I have seen the messages, they demonstrate your manipulation of her. You have significantly upset her development. You have robbed her of the freedom a young teenager should enjoy. You groomed her for your own ends."

Mr Matthew Brook, prosecuting, said the offences came to light in September last year when the girl's mother handed her daughter's phone over to the police.

She was concerned that her daughter had been contacting older men via the Blackberry Messaging (BBM) service.

After being arrested, Turner at first denied the offences but after being shown the text messages, changed his account and said he believed the girl was 16.

Miss Lynette McClement, defending, said Turner was a lonely and isolated individual who lived alone.

She added: "This was a young lady who contacted him on Blackberry messaging. He told me she was the first person who had been nice to him and the first girl who had shown him any affection. This is an extremely inexperienced and socially inept young man. He is not a predator. He is at great pains to say it will never happen again."
