The victim had fallen asleep in his chair when the raider forced his way through a bedroom window.

The burglar searched the room before moving on to the living room, where the victim woke up and hit out at him with his walking stick.

Police say the pensioner was left with cuts to his arms as the attacker restrained him.

Dc Richard Hall said: "The elderly man suffers with poor vision and has frail skin which tore during the struggle. Fortunately his injuries will heal and he shouldn't suffer any long term ill effects. He is quite resilient, but it was still a shocking experience for him.

"Extra security measures will be installed at the property to help protect the gentleman and make him feel safer.

"Nothing was stolen during the break-in, but we need to catch the offender to prevent this happening to anyone else, so I am asking anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact me on 101.

"Equally if anyone has any information about who might be responsible, I would ask them to examine their conscience and do the right thing."

A forensic examination has been carried out at the house after the raid, which happened just after midnight last Sunday.
