Staffordshire woman, 26, charged with ISIS membership and inciting terrorism on Twitter

A woman aged 26 from Staffordshire has appeared in court charged with belonging to ISIS and inciting terrorism on social media.

Tareena Shakil, who is from Burton upon Trent, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this afternoon, where she indicated she would deny the charge.

She was arrested by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit at Heathrow Airport in February after arriving on a flight from Turkey.

She is accused of a series of tweets in September and October last year that 'intended members of the public to be directly encouraged or otherwise induced by the statement to commit, prepare or instigate acts of terrorism, or being reckless as to whether members of the public will be directly or indirectly encouraged or otherwise induced by the statement to commit, prepare or instigate such acts or offences.'

She is also accused of belonging to a 'proscribed organisation, namely Islamic State of Iraq and Syria', which is she is alleged to hjave joined while out of the country.

Today she was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on July 20.
