The victim, 21, was found at 9.30pm on Saturday night in Treynham Close, Stowlawn, after a call from a member of the public reporting a man lying in the street.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and a post mortem has now revealed he had been stabbed. Officers have also revealed that they have traced a man who initially went to the victim's aid.

The scene remained sealed off by officers this afternoon, as a major hunt to find the killer was underway.

Forensic officers at the scene on Monday

Det Insp Warren Hines, leading the probe, said officers were keeping an open mind over the motive.

"This is a terribly tragic incident in which a young local man has lost his life.

"We have a team of officers assigned solely to this case and they are working shifts around the clock to get to the bottom of what happened and apprehend whoever's responsible. We will be doing all we can to get justice for the man's loved ones."

"We have had a good response from the public, with many people providing information, and believe we've traced a man who went to the victim's aid but who unfortunately left the area before officers could speak to him.

"I still need to speak to anyone who was in the Treynham Close area of Stowlawn on Saturday night at the time and may have witnessed the attack or saw anything that could help the enquiry. Any snippet of information could be vital so please contact us."
