The lorry driver called 999 to report strange sounds coming from the top of his cab, which he had driven from Calais. He pulled over on the M6 northbound between junction 6 for Birmingham and 7 for Great Barr at around 6.30pm yesterday.

Officers found the man, in his 20s, on the roof and arrested him for immigration offences. He remained in custody at a West Midlands Police station today.

The UK border force has been informed and will continue to deal with the inquiry.

Supt Paul Keasey, head of the Central Motorway Police Group, said: "It is incredible the staggering lengths people will go to gain entry into the UK.

"This man risked his life and caused the driver to pull over on the busy motorway in rush hour.

"The man is currently in custody and will be dealt with by our partners at UKBF."
