Brinsford Prison worker crashed into tree after pub drinking session

A prison worker who crashed into a tree while over the drink drive legal limit has been banned from driving. more

Terrance Rowley who works as a support staff member at Brinsford Prison, a young offenders institute, near Wolverhampton, had been drinking throughout the day when he got behind the wheel and drove along East Road on April 13, a court heard.

The 36-year-old pleaded guilty to driving his Vauxhall Astra while over the alcohol limit at Cannock Magistrates Court.

The hearing was told Rowley, of East Court, Brinsford, lost control going around a bend and crashed his car into a tree, writing it off.

Mr John Peel, prosecuting, said: "At 1.10am the defendant's girlfriend received a call from him saying his car had been smashed up and she drove to the location and towed him back home.

"She noticed he smelt of alcohol and when she got home she realised police had been driving behind her.

"The Vauxhall Astra had severe front-end damage and an officer giving evidence said the defendant had several scratches on his forehead.

"In an interview he said he had been drinking spirits, Carling and Stella at the Rainbow Pub."

A breath test revealed he had 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath The legal limit is 35.

Mr Steven Lee, defending, said: "My client accepts he had a few drinks during the day.

"He was driving along an unfamiliar lane and his calculations going round the bend meant he had a collision.

"My client was shaken up by the accident and when he arrived home he had another drink."

Rowley was disqualified from driving for 15 months and fined £387.

Chair magistrate Mr Doug Hood said: "For this offence you will be disqualified for a period of 15 months."
