Arrests over death of 13-month-old girl in Great Barr

A 13-month-old girl died today after her heart stopped at a property in the West Midlands, sparking the arrest of two women on suspicion of neglect.

Emergency services were called to Sandringham Court, on Walsall Road, Great Barr, just before 2am following reports a child had been taken ill.

She was taken to hospital where she died a short time later. The suspects are aged 50 and 30.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Joanne Hunt said: "Two women have been arrested on suspicion of neglect and are currently helping with enquiries- a post mortem will take place in due course."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Crews arrived to find a baby girl in cardiac arrest and immediately commenced CPR at the scene.

"Due to the critical condition of the child, ambulance staff quickly transferred her to Birmingham Children's Hospital whilst they continued advanced life support en route.

"Sadly, despite best efforts, the baby was later confirmed dead at hospital."
