The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spotted his ex walking close to Bloxwich Leisure Centre and began chasing her.

She ran away but he caught up with her and jabbed her in the back with a key, leaving her with a 4.5cm deep cut. She was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

At Walsall Magistrates Court , the teenager was given a six-month detention training order after admitting a charge of wounding and breaching bail conditions.

However, District Judge Michael Morris refused to lift restrictions on the case prohibiting the youth from being identified, saying he did not want it to be a 'name and shame' exercise and that it would not be in the public interest to name him.

Miss Jenny Dean, prosecuting, told the court the victim and defendant had been in a six-month relationship. "She was walking with her cousin along Bloxwich Road," Miss Dean said. "She saw him and ran away. She said she felt a blow to her back and felt a warm trickle. She saw blood."

After stabbing the girl, the defendant ran home and told his uncle what he had done. His uncle then went to Bloxwich Leisure Centre after being told that was where the girl was and he told police who had been responsible for the attack.

Miss Dean told the court that the boy suspected the girl had cheated on him.

She read a statement out to the court from the victim which stated she was scared to go outside alone after what had happened.

Mr Sukhdip Randhawa, defending the 16-year-old, told the court his client had no previous convictions.

He said: "He is a young man who made a full and frank admission in interview. He has shown during these proceedings genuine remorse. There is no suggestion this was a premeditated attack. It was spur of the moment."

District Judge Morris issued a restraining order which means the teenager cannot contact the girl for 10 years.
