Three men and a woman from the Birmingham area were taken into custody yesterday morning.

Begg, from Hall Green, Birmingham, a former Wolverhampton University law student, is being held on suspicion of attending a terrorist training camp and facilitating terrorism overseas.

The others, a man aged 36 from Shirley, Solihull, and a 44-year-old woman and her son aged 20, from Sparkhill, were detained on suspicion of assisting terrorism overseas.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said officers had been given an extra five days to continue questioning the four people.

A district judge assessed the progress of the investigation and granted a warrant of further detention until the morning of Tuesday March 4.

Meanwhile, searches continue at the three home addresses of the individuals detained, the spokeswoman said.

Mr Begg was held in the US-run military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for nearly three years.
