The GP was holding a surgery at Linkway Medical Practice when the assault happened. Patients said they saw him run from his room holding his neck.

Police said the doctor, in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery for a knife wound.

He has now been discharged from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police were called to the practice, in the Lyng Centre in Frank Fisher Way, just before 6pm on Monday.

Patients were asked by staff to move from the main reception and waiting area to a nearby staircase during the commotion.

Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group chairman, Dr Nick Harding, today said they would help police with their investigations into the attack.

"We were shocked and appalled to hear of the attack at one of our health centres and our sympathies go to the doctor, his family, friends and colleagues," he said.

"We wish him a speedy recovery and we will be supporting the authorities with any future investigation."

One patient, aged 42 and from West Bromwich, who did not want to be named, said: "I was in the waiting room and I could hear all this commotion and then a doctor came running out holding his neck. He was bleeding profusely. I just couldn't believe it."

A 65-year-old man from Smethwick was due to appear before Sandwell magistrates today charged with wounding and possession of a weapon in a public place.
