The 33-year-old computer programmer, who police said was "completely innocent", was set upon with a bat or cosh as the attackers opened his car door when he pulled up outside the gym.

The victim was treated for a shattered hand, cuts to his forehead and bruised shoulders.

Detectives have said the man's attackers must have been lying in wait, outside Dean's Gym in Popes Lane at about 7.25pm.

Detective Inspector Jim Munro, of West Midlands Police, said: "These men were clearly lying in wait for someone.

"It was a premeditated attack, and it's resulted in a completely innocent man suffering nasty injuries.

"If anyone knows anything about the incident, or was near the gym at the time and witnessed the assault, I'd urge them to call me."

The attackers are described as Asian males, one of whom was of stocky build and wore a black woolly hat.

It is believed they fled in a white sporty saloon car after the attack, on November 11.
