Twenty firefighters battled with the blaze as it tore through the building in Pinson Road, Willenhall, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Vandals broke into the property that has been derelict for several years and set light to an old stage.

Flames were shooting through the windows by the time firefighters reached the scene after the alarm was raised by a passerby at around 3.40am.

Firefighters from Bilston, Willenhall and Fallings Park fire stations were joined by the hydraulic platform based at Walsall during the two-and-a-half hour fight to control the situation and stop the blaze spreading to other derelict premises nearby.

Watch Commander Andy Rainey said afterwards: "It was arson. Whoever was responsible set fire to the stage at the front of the hall. It must have been burning for some time before being spotted."
