Officers from the Central Motorways Police Group were carrying out routine checks when they pulled over a 40–year–old man on Armstrong Way, Willenhall, near junction 10 of the motorway.

They found £31,000 in the car, which is believed to be the proceeds of crime. They arrested the man, from the Cannock area, and he has now been bailed by police until a date in October.

Brigg Ford, spokesman for West Midlands Police, said: "The car was stopped as part of routine checks for speeding on the M6 motorway.

"During a search of the vehicle, officers found the cash, which it is suspected is the proceeds of crime. The money has now been seized."

Officers made the arrest at around 12.30pm yesterday.

It recently emerged around 250 drivers a day are illegally using the hard shoulder in the West Midlands – as a new crackdown is being launched that could see motorists fined.

The clampdown was launched by the Highways Agency and Central Motorway Police Group last week, with drivers warned they could have to pay up or get points on their licence.
