Teenager admits killing Walsall teenager Ben Morutare

A man has admitted killing teenager Ben Morutare outside a social club in Smethwick.

Andy Ly pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Ly, 18, of Fulmer Walk, Ladywood, Birmingham, along with co-accused Omar Robinson, 19, of Rann Close, Ladywood, had been on trial for 16-year-old Ben's murder.

But at the end of the prosecution's case, Ly's plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter was yesterday accepted and the charge of murder was ordered to lie on file.

The charge of murder against Robinson was dropped and he was told he had no case to answer.

Both Ly and Robinson pleaded guilty to violent disorder and will be sentenced at a later date.

Ben, of Holden Crescent, Coalpool, Walsall, died from a leg stab wound on July 28 last year with witnesses in the trial claiming up to 80 men chased him before he was killed.

He attended an 18th birthday party and was found on grass near to Smethwick Old Guards and Comrades Club. He later died in Birmingham Children's Hospital.

During the prosecution's case the court heard that Ben had been trying protect a friend during a scuffle.

During the trial, prosecutor Mr Michael Burrows QC, said Ly was seen walking away with a bloodstained T-shirt after the attack and was heard saying: "I stabbed him up."

Jordan Campbell, 18, of Portland Road, Edgbaston; Kwamae Phillips, 18, of Gillott Road, Edgbaston; Tahj Mills, 18, of Waterside Street, West Bromwich; Tobias Blake, 20, of Kelsall Croft, Ladywood, and Aaron Parkins, 19 all deny violent disorder.

The trial against them continues.
