The 74-year-old was arrested following the discovery of the explosive device at the Aisha mosque in Rutter Street last Saturday.

Detectives swooped on the pensioner's Walsall home at 4.30pm yesterday and took him into custody on suspicion of causing an explosion likely to endanger life or damage property.

On Friday night, he was released pending further investigation.

Tonight officers released new details of a person of interest seen in the area at around the time that the device exploded with a loud bang, on the Friday night before the discovery.

The man was described as white and of average build. He was walking alone along Corporation Street from the direction of Wednesbury Road between 10pm and 10.30pm last Friday.

He was carrying a small bag.

Witnesses say that the device exploded outside the perimeter building on Friday night but not realising the significance of the "loud bang", they did not report it.

A member of the public recovered the debris and brought it inside the mosque the following day.

Police were then called.

Detectives spent Friday at the mosque as part of an anniversary appeal.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
