Smash driver facing drink drive charge

A van driver has been charged with drink driving after a four-year-old boy was knocked down in Cannock.

The man, believed to be local and in his 50s, was arrested after the collision in Benion Road, Chadsmoor.

Up to 10 residents came to the youngster's rescue after he was knocked off his bike and became trapped under the wheels of a van.

The residents lifted up the vehicle to free the boy, who was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with injuries to his leg, neck, back and face. He is now recovering at home.

The collision happened on Monday at 6.15pm.

Staffordshire Police today confirmed the driver has been charged with drink driving. He has been bailed until October 2. Anyone with more information is asked to call police on 101.
