South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson stopped by at Wombourne Tennis Club to admire its £27,000 revamp.

A 40-strong group of club members turned out to welcome Mr Williamson into their sporting haven on Friday.

Mr Williamson said: "What's so fantastic is that this is a club that actually provides real opportunities to learn tennis at every age and skill level.

"It's really good to see that investment that they have made and it's something that they have had to do to keep the quality of the surface at it's very best. To have got it all done at this time of the year is brilliant.

"Wombourne Cricket, Tennis & Bowls Club is a real asset that benefits the whole community and I think something that we can be really proud of - a first rate facility in South Staffordshire."

Two of the three courts at the Church Road club were refurbished with a Sporturf all weather surface – a sand filled carpet which is hard wearing and long lasting.

The Wombourne Cricket, Tennis & Bowls Club funded the revamp, with the tennis club providing a contribution.

Club members are now preparing to welcome in residents when they host their open day on April 14.

They will also mark the occasion by officially opening the newly-resurfaced tennis courts.

Chairman of the club Angus Hughes said: "The day was glorious. He came down to have a look and give his seal of approval.

"He has a bit of a game while he was there and knocked a few balls over the net. Gavin does quite a lot for Wombourne, he seems to be round and about quite often.

"The tennis courts were in dire need of resurfacing. It's really put us in a good position going forward."

Mr Hughes, who said the club is also on the hunt for sponsors, added: "We want and try and attract as many people off the streets and get them to come in and have a go."
