It happened around the crossing on Pinfold Street. The road was closed for several hours before opening at 1.15pm.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "The four month old girl came out of the pushchair as a result of the collision.

She had suffered injuries to both arms and her head. After treatment at the scene, she was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital for further assessment with her mother travelling with her. There were no other patients."

John Cownley, owner of Cownleys W E barber shop on Pinfold Street, said: "I heard the buggy had taken the most impact. There was one ambulance and five cop cars at the scene. I believe the crash took place more or less on the zebra crossing, which has had accidents before. It can be dangerous crossing the road."

Just hours after the incident, a parent launched a petition for a safer crossing on the road.

By this morning the petition on change.org already had more than 200 supporters.

The parent, who wrote under the username Louise R, said: "Something needs to be done to prevent this from happening again."

A Walsall Council spokesman said: "When the outcomes of the police investigation are available, our highway engineers will consider any appropriate actions."
