Shattered glass covered the pavement and road around the structure, while the Polo was left with a smashed passenger seat window and crumpled bumper.

A 52-year-old woman managed to get out of the car herself and was checked over by paramedics who joined police officers and firefighters from Willenhall at the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "At 7.11am we were called to Walsall Road near the Sikh temple and McDonalds.

"The bus shelter had sustained significant damage."

"A 53-year-old woman who got out of the vehicle herself was complaining of chest and neck pain. She was immobilised and taken to Walsall Manor Hospital."
