And the 90-mile trip home will be all the more sweeter thanks to the superb performance by Paul Lambert's men.

With the whole of the Anfield Road End allocated to Wolves' raucous following, the away fans roared their side to victory - drowning out their opposite numbers in the Kop with chants of 'Wolves ay we' and 'When the Wolves go marching in' before bursting into wild celebrations at the full-time whistle.

Our reporters also made the journey from Wolverhampton to Liverpool:

Earlier a Richard Stearman header after just 53 seconds and a superb breakaway finish from Andreas Weimann had stunned their Premier League opposition, sent the away fans into a frenzy and put Wolves 2-0 ahead before half time.

And although Divock Origi pulled one back for the Reds with five minutes to go, Wolves always looked the most likely winners and saw out the match comfortably.

A flare was thrown onto the pitch as Wolves fans celebrated their side's first goal

As the remaining Liverpool faithful trudged to the exits, the ecstatic away supporters made Anfield shake with a booming Icelandic hand clap led by their heroic players.

Outside the ground, superlatives were streaming out of Wolves fans' smiling mouths as they heaped praise on their team.

'Superb', 'fantastic', 'proud of each one of them', 'unbelievable', 'mad', 'beyond our dreams'. 'We're Wolves'.

Graham Arnold, aged 42 from Willenhall, was one of the 8,300 Midland supporters lucky enough to have a ticket.

He said: "I didn't expect us to win today. I was hopeful of doing so but on paper it didn't look like it."

Paul Waddington, aged 51 from Wolverhampton, said: "I'm buzzing after that win. I haven't felt like this in a while."

"I'm talking about the old days when we got a win like this. It's brilliant to say all the smiles on faces."

Meanwhile former Wolves players Phil Parkes and Steve Daley, who joined fans on coaches to and from Wolverhampton, said they had always been confident their team would do well.

Parkes described the win as 'fantastic' and said the supporters deserved the result.

"It was a great result. The lads played great today. The support was fantastic, it was worth a gold star," he added.

"It was a big compliment to Wolves fans how many came to Anfield. I think what was nice our players were clapped off by the Liverpool fans."

And with staff, supporters and players all on cloud nine, next is the FA Cup fifth round draw at 7.30pm on Monday.

Where now for Wolves?
